Building a Better You

So what does 2010 have in store for you? I went to a conference years back that was held here in Tennessee. I sat through a breakout session about worship and worship leaders. I remember on particular phrase that has stuck with me ever since.

What are you doing to better your craft?
What do you mean better my craft? I can play guitar just fine plus I know more than 4 chords so playing worship songs is a walk in the park. And they are never challenging to sing. My craft is cool.
But what are you doing to better yourself, your craft, to not become complacent with where you are? (if you haven’t figured it out this is an inner monologue going on in my head)
Uh, nothing really, I mean I practice my guitar a little bit and look at the pictures in Layers Magazine. but who really needs to be able to play a C#+5-3x15sus4 chord on a guitar.
So… God made you lazy then.
Wait, what, No.
So, what are you doing to better your craft.

Hmm. As a [plug in your title] I have a great responsibility to not take my gifts for granted. I believe that there was a parable talking about that exact scenario. So it seems to serve then that I should not sit idle but cultivate the gifts that God gave me. If that means guitar lessons, piano lessons, kelbytraining.com, and so on, then that is what I should do.
Regardless of what role you play in the Church – leader, band member, pastor, tech director, artist – we should all view our gifts from God something that we take seriously and continue to develop.

May 2010 be filled with new adventures and new challenges that make us all better at being who we are.

    Nate,

This could be applied to what God has called us to do in our careers as well. I have been slacking a little lately on making mtself a better respiratory therapist, which is what God has for me to do at this time. Thaanks for making me think about making my craft better. Not to make your head swell, but you are pretty wise to be so young.
    Melanie
